Tyler Cameron’s Engagement Is Getting Dragged Online — Bachelor Nation Fans Can’t Get Over His “Better Late Than Never” Caption
Tyler Cameron is officially engaged to Tate Madden, but instead of the announcement receiving nothing but congratulations, some Bachelor Nation fans are questioning the couple’s engagement caption — and the Reddit reaction has been surprisingly brutal.
The former Bachelorette star announced on August 15 that he had proposed to Tate during a romantic getaway at Little Palm Island in Florida. The couple shared two photos from the proposal, including a shot of Tyler down on one knee and another of the newly engaged pair embracing.
But it was Tyler’s caption that immediately grabbed attention. Alongside the engagement photos, he wrote: “Better late than never they say.”

And Bachelor Nation Reddit had thoughts.
The engagement thread on r/thebachelor quickly filled with comments from fans who thought the caption was awkward, unromantic or downright concerning. One highly upvoted reaction joked that the caption made it sound as though Tate had been waiting forever for Tyler to finally pop the question.
Another commenter said the caption was “giving she gave me an ultimatum,” while another admitted they would not be happy if their partner used that wording to announce their engagement.

For some fans, the biggest issue wasn’t the engagement itself — it was what they felt the caption implied. The phrase “better late than never” can obviously be interpreted as a joke about finally getting engaged after dating for a while. But several Reddit users interpreted it as Tyler suggesting he had been reluctant to marry Tate or had somehow been pushed into taking the next step.
One commenter even said the caption made it seem like Tate had to convince him to propose. Others argued that even if the couple intended it as an inside joke, it was an odd choice for such a major announcement.
The criticism became even more intense when fans pointed out that Tate apparently had a hand in the caption. According to a comment in the Reddit discussion, Tate said the caption was her idea — something that caused some commenters to reconsider whether Tyler was actually making a joke at her expense.
That still didn’t stop the jokes.

One Reddit user quipped that they initially read the caption as “better Tate than never,” while another suggested the couple should have gone with something completely different.
Others couldn’t understand why a newly engaged couple would publicly joke about how long it took for the man to propose.
And then there were fans who brought up Tyler’s history on The Bachelorette.
One Reddit commenter criticized the decision to reference Tyler’s past reality-TV journey in an engagement announcement, pointing out that he originally appeared on the franchise while pursuing a marriage with someone else. For longtime Bachelor Nation viewers, Tyler’s complicated reality-TV dating history is still part of the way they view him.
The backlash also wasn’t completely new. Some Reddit users revisited previous discussions about Tyler and Tate’s relationship, including old posts where fans criticized Tyler for sharing private relationship moments or questioned the couple’s dynamic.
That history appears to have colored the reaction to the engagement announcement. Some commenters said they had previously noticed what they considered awkward moments between the two, while others insisted that social-media posts don’t necessarily tell the whole story.
Of course, not everyone hated the caption.
A few fans defended Tyler and Tate, arguing that social-media captions aren’t that serious and that the couple may simply have a playful sense of humor. One commenter said they actually found the caption funny and compared it to couples who use jokes such as “finally” on wedding-related posts.
And despite the criticism, plenty of people were genuinely happy for the couple.
Tyler and Tate have been together for roughly two years, after first meeting in 2022 while Tyler was filming his home-renovation show Going Home with Tyler Cameron. They eventually went public with their relationship in 2024.
Tyler had also previously made it clear that marriage was something he wanted with Tate. During a 2025 appearance with her on Jason Tartick’s podcast, he said their relationship was going in a great direction and that he could see them getting engaged. Tate, meanwhile, said she would marry him “in a second,” while Tyler responded that he did want to marry her.
So while Reddit may be divided over one sentence, the reality is that Tyler Cameron and Tate Madden are now officially engaged.
The bigger question is whether Tyler’s “Better late than never” caption was simply an innocent joke between two people who know each other’s humor — or whether Bachelor Nation fans are reading more into those five words than they were ever meant to say.
Either way, one thing is clear: the engagement announcement got people talking.
