The Real Reason Jess Edwards and Spencer Conley Broke Up & Ended Their Engagement

The Real Reason Jess Edwards and Spencer Conley Broke Up: Did Their Different Timelines Finally Catch Up With Them?

Jess Edwards and Spencer Conley looked like one of the strongest success stories to come out of Bachelor in Paradise Season 10. After falling for each other in Costa Rica, the couple got engaged and appeared ready to build a life together.

But just one year after their engagement aired, Jess and Spencer have officially called it quits — and their breakup has fans looking back at some of the warning signs that were visible long before the relationship ended.

The former couple announced their split in a joint statement shared to Instagram on September 8.

“After a lot of honest conversations and reflection, we’ve made the difficult decision to end our engagement and go our separate ways,” they wrote, adding, “There wasn’t one moment that brought us here.”

They emphasized that they still have love and respect for each other and described their year and a half together as being filled with memories they will always cherish.

But while Jess and Spencer are making it clear that there wasn’t one dramatic event responsible for the breakup, their relationship had already faced some major differences — particularly when it came to where they would live, how quickly they would move forward and when they wanted marriage and children.

Jess Gave Up Her California Life To Move For Spencer

One of the biggest changes in the relationship came when Jess made the decision to leave San Diego and move to Texas to start a life with Spencer.

The move was significant. Jess had to pack up her life in California and eventually relocate to Dallas, where Spencer had his family and business.

The process wasn’t exactly simple either. Jess later described having to essentially move twice, with her belongings initially being placed in storage before the couple finally moved into their new home together.

At the time, Jess was excited about the future they were building. But looking back, the move also represented a major sacrifice and a major commitment from Jess, especially for someone who had previously been clear about wanting to take certain steps at her own pace.

Their Marriage And Kids Timeline Was Already A Point Of Tension

Fans who watched Bachelor in Paradise may remember Jess appearing uncomfortable with the idea of rushing major relationship milestones.

The age difference between Jess and Spencer also meant they weren’t necessarily approaching marriage and children from exactly the same place in life.

During interviews after the show, the pair tried to downplay any major disagreement over their timeline. Spencer said Jess wanted children before she turned 30, while he was thinking about having kids within roughly the next two years.

Jess, meanwhile, repeatedly emphasized that she didn’t want to put a strict timeline on the relationship.

That attitude continued even after their engagement.

In a September 2025 interview with PEOPLE, Jess explained that they wanted to see where they were a year later rather than immediately start planning their wedding. She said that if they wanted to begin planning earlier, they could, but there was no need to force a schedule.

That is important because the couple had already been engaged. They were not simply dating anymore. Marriage and children were no longer distant possibilities, they were the obvious next steps.

And that may have exposed a deeper difference between what each person wanted from the relationship and how quickly they wanted it.

Spencer’s Brother’s Wedding May Have Put The Pressure On

Spencer had already talked about his brothers being part of his wedding party, and wedding planning was something that was becoming increasingly real for the couple.

In February, Spencer even joked that he was “worried” about Jess being able to find enough bridesmaids to match his groomsmen. His three brothers were expected to stand beside him, along with several friends.

For a couple already navigating different expectations around marriage, family weddings and conversations about the future could only make those differences more difficult to ignore.

And this is where viewers may see the breakup differently from the simple statement that there was “no one moment.”

It may not have been one argument or one fight.

It may have been a gradual realization that the life they were building together wasn’t moving at the same pace for both of them.

The Biggest Clue? Jess Wasn’t In A Rush

Interestingly, the couple’s own interviews repeatedly showed Jess resisting the idea of putting a strict deadline on marriage.

Even after moving in together, the pair said they weren’t rushing to start wedding planning. In February, Jess explained that they had initially planned to revisit wedding planning after living together for a year.

Spencer agreed that they wanted to take their time and simply live normally together after spending months having to keep their relationship private.

That sounds reasonable… but it also highlights the central issue.

Jess had already left California, moved states and started an entirely new life with Spencer.

For her, slowing down on marriage may have been about making sure the relationship was right before taking another enormous step.

For Spencer, the vision of marriage, children and a permanent future may have been closer on the horizon.

Those differences don’t necessarily make either person wrong.

But they can become impossible to ignore when a couple is already engaged.

So Was Spencer “Controlling”?

That is the question many fans are now asking after revisiting the relationship.

There were certainly moments on Bachelor in Paradise when Jess appeared to feel pressure surrounding the relationship’s progression, including conversations about moving in together and the future.

However, there is no confirmed evidence that Spencer was controlling or that he personally forced Jess into any decision.

In fact, after their engagement, Spencer publicly said they were taking things one step at a time, and the couple repeatedly described their wedding plans as flexible.

So the stronger interpretation may not be that Spencer “controlled” Jess — but that Jess may have increasingly realized how much of her life she had reorganized around a relationship whose future she still wasn’t ready to rush.

She moved across the country.

She built a home with him.

They became engaged.

And eventually, the question became whether the life they were building was actually the life both of them wanted.

Their Breakup Statement Says There Wasn’t One Moment

That makes the couple’s latest statement especially interesting.

Jess and Spencer specifically said there “wasn’t one moment” that brought them to the breakup.

Instead, they described honest conversations and reflection.

That suggests the split was likely the result of accumulated differences rather than one explosive incident.

And that may explain why the relationship could look perfectly happy on social media while quietly changing behind the scenes.

Just weeks before their breakup became public, Jess had even pushed back against online speculation about trouble in the relationship. Spencer later said he had become burned out on social media and was keeping more of his personal life private.

Now, fans know why there was suddenly less of Spencer in Jess’ content.

The engagement was over.

Jess And Spencer’s Love Story Has Come To An End

Whatever ultimately happened behind closed doors, Jess and Spencer are now officially going their separate ways.

Their relationship may have started as one of Bachelor in Paradise’s most convincing love stories, but the reality of building a life together outside the show proved much more complicated.

The California-to-Texas move, different approaches to marriage and children, and the pressure surrounding their future may have all contributed to a relationship that eventually reached its breaking point.

But according to Jess and Spencer themselves, there wasn’t a single villain or one defining moment.

There were simply difficult conversations, reflection and two people realizing that going their separate ways was ultimately the right decision.
