At age 66, Mel Owens took the lead as the bachelor for Season 2 of The Golden Bachelor. In June 2025, he sparked significant backlash when he told a sports podcast that he preferred women aged 45 to 60 and that “if they’re 60 or over, I’m cutting them.” He also made remarks about wanting to avoid women with “artificial hips and wigs.”

The comments immediately drew criticism for being ageist, especially given that the show’s whole concept centres on older daters and especially women over 60.

Facing mounting backlash, Owens offered a public apology. He stated that his comments were “unfair, insensitive” and that he recognized the hurt they had caused. He revealed that a friend helped him see the error of his ways and that he addressed the contestants directly at the start of filming, asking for a chance to earn their trust.

During filming, the women participating on the show confronted the remarks during a roast‐style group date, which Owens described as “brutal” but valuable.

On a different front, Owens has also teased that the season’s ending is far from ordinary. He called the finale “brilliant,” saying viewers “won’t believe” how the story wraps up, adding that the emotional journey “is so good.”
