The Man at the Center: Mel Owens
Sixty-six-year-old Mel Owens rose to prominence as a linebacker for nine seasons with the Los Angeles Rams before embarking on a legal career in Orange County, where he represents athletes in injury cases. He is a father of two sons from his marriage to his first wife; after divorcing in 2020 and coping with his father’s passing, he devoted himself to parenthood and coaching sports teams.
Now, Owens is searching for love again and “hopes to meet someone to share life’s simple joys, build plans for the future, and grow stronger together,” according to ABC’s official synopsis.
Controversy Surrounding Age Preferences
In a podcast interview, Owenhs candidly mentioned a dating preference for women aged 45 to 60, and indicated that contestants older than 60 would be eliminated from consideration. He also emphasized that he wanted women who were physically fit and preferred a “natural look”.
This sparked backlash. The Golden Bachelor alumni Gerry Turner called the notion of excluding women over 60 “a huge mistake,” warning that limiting the age range undermines the spirit of seasoned romance Meanwhile, fellow contestant Kathy Swarts defended Owens, saying he likely spoke without thinking and that meeting women over 60—like herself, at over 70—could shift his perspective
Season two will return to ABC this fall, continuing the heartwarming tradition of guided romance later in life. With Bachelor in Paradise currently airing and The Golden Bachelor readying its September debut, fans have plenty of romance to anticipate.
