“Theresa and I have had a number of heart-to-heart conversations, and we’ve looked closely at our situation, our living situation, so forth and — and we’ve kind of come to the conclusion mutually that it’s probably time for us to — dissolve our marriage,” Gerry said in an interview for “Good Morning America.”
“The thing that strikes me the most in our conversations is how dedicated both of us are to our families. So we look at these situations, and I think we just feel like it’s best for the happiness of each of us to live apart,” said Gerry.
“We have received so much love and support from so many people who watched ‘The Golden Bachelor,’ and I don’t think we can tell you how many people told us that it gave them so much hope,” Theresa continued. “We want none of that to change for anybody.”
Theresa said the couple never could agree upon where to live, never bought a house together and ultimately decided “it’s best for the happiness of each of us to, to live apart.”
”We looked at home after home, but we never got to the point where we made that decision,” she added.
“The thing that strikes me the most in our conversations, it’s been how dedicated both of us are to our families,” Gerry said. “So we look at these conversation and we both think it’s best for the happiness of each of us to live apart.”
The couple, who were all smiles added that they still love each other.
“I still love this person. There’s no doubt in my mind, I still am in love with her. I root for her every day,” Gerry said, pointing to Theresa who replied, “I still love him.”
Gerry said they will return their rings but cherish the memories.
On April 1, TMZ reported that the newlyweds were still living separately after the wedding, with Gerry in Indiana and Theresa in New Jersey.
Gerry and Theresa tied the knot in a broadcast wedding on January 4 in the presence of their kids and grandchildren.
Theresa added that she hoped their quick divorce would not discourage viewers who had been inspired by the couple. “We say, ‘Don’t give up,’” she said. “We say, ‘Stay in it, stay hopeful, because we are.’”
